Volunteering in Nepal: What you need to know before you apply
VCD Nepal is an independent, locally run organisation without government or corporate funding. Programme fees help cover essential costs such as accommodation, meals, airport pickup, orientation, local coordination, and ongoing support.
Our fees are significantly lower than large international agencies and are used directly in Nepal to sustain community partnerships and volunteer support.
Once your application has been reviewed and accepted, VCD Nepal provides you with pre-departure guidance covering visas, packing, cultural expectations, and arrival details. Volunteers are expected to arrange flights, visas, insurance, and personal preparation.
The minimum age to volunteer is 18. There is no upper age limit. Volunteers from diverse backgrounds and life stages are welcome, provided they are motivated, adaptable, and respectful of local communities.
Most programmes do not require formal qualifications. Motivation, adaptability, and openness are more important than previous experience. Some placements may prefer relevant skills, which will be clearly communicated in advance.
Volunteer placements typically range from two to twenty weeks, depending on the programme. Longer stays are encouraged where possible, as continuity benefits both volunteers and host communities.
Extensions are possible, subject to availability and mutual agreement. It’s best to discuss this with your coordinator as early as possible.
English does not need to be your first language, but a basic conversational level is required for all placements.
Learning basic local Nepali phrases is encouraged to enhance your communication.
